IRL
traceroute project
Overview
|
Traceroute is a Texas A&M research
project that builds router-level maps of the Internet from a single
source. Our server executes a traceroute to various destinations in the
Internet using several popular TCP, ICMP, and UDP protocols. |

FAQ
 |
How can my domain or network be removed from
the test? |
Please contact
Matt Smith with your subnet
or hostname information. |
|
 |
Where do you send packets and what
is the probing rate? |
Host s6.irl.cs.tamu.edu
performs a traceroute to each destination in our set of target hosts,
which consists of well-known web and DNS servers. Each host receives a
few small packets needed to detect the hop distance from our host. The
trace proceeds in reverse order and aims to reduce the load on
intermediate routers by stopping as soon as a known router is found. |
|
 |
Can this project crash or compromise my
domain? |
Not to our knowledge.
All transmitted packets are compliant with protocol specification and do
not aim to exploit any vulnerabilities in target hosts. |
|
 |
What are you planning to do with
the obtained data? |
We respect the privacy
of target networks. Results of this project will be reported only in
statistical summaries that will not reveal the structure of individual
networks. |
